Outline of Hydrogen Station

Hydrogen energy is a clean, pollution-free energy source, and hydrogen energy is an ideal energy source because it enables clean and highly efficient fuel cells that convert hydrogen into electricity.

According to the hydrogen economy road map announced by the government in January 2019, Korea is looking for an opportunity to become the world’s best hydrogen economy country.

The cumulative production of hydrogen vehicles will increase from 2,000 units in 2018 to 6.20 million units in 2040 (2.9 million units in domestic market and 3.3 million units in overseas market), achieving the world’s largest market share.

Domestic supply: 177 units in 2017 (51 new units) → 889 units in 2018 (712 new units) → Over 4,000 units in 2019

Expansion of hydrogen filling station:  14 (’18) → 310 (’22)  →  1,200 (’40) places

Expanding public transportation: It aims to supply 80,000 hydrogen taxis, 40,000 hydrogen buses, and 30,000 hydrogen trucks by 2040.

The widespread use of hydrogen as a future transport fuel requires the development of an appropriate vehicle fuel supply chain.
Like existing oil supply systems, future hydrogen infrastructure must include production sites, storage facilities, delivery options, conversion and end use.
And, in response to fluctuations in demand for hydrogen, it is necessary to supply fuel to the hydrogen filling station.

In this connection, The hydrogen station consists of a hydrogen storage facility, a compressor, a cooler, and a charger.

The hydrogen fulling station is composed of a hydrogen supply device, a compression device, a storage device, a charging device and a control device, and the hydrogen supply method is as follows.

The hydrogen filling station is divided into off-site (Central supply method) and on-site (Local supply method) depending on the hydrogen supply method.

The off site method using by-product hydrogen is installed mainly for domestic use.

Off-site (Central supply method): Hydrogen produced in a specific region is transported to a hydrogen filling station by pipeline, tube trailer, mobile hydrogen transport and liquid hydrogen transport.

  • The advantage is that it produces a large amount of hydrogen, which makes the hydrogen production cost low.
  • The disadvantage is the additional transport costs associated with the transfer of hydrogen.

On-site (Local supply method): Hydrogen is produced by reforming natural gas, LPG, or electrolysis of water in a hydrogen filling station and charging it to a hydrogen electric car and a hydrogen bus.

  • The advantage is applicable when the transport cost is increased due to a large distance in the hydrogen production area.
  • The disadvantage is that the cost of installing the initial hydrogen charging station is high because a reforming device and a water electrolysis device are required to produce hydrogen.

Signed Business agreement (MOU) to establish hydrogen charging infrastructure


In order to increase the localization rate of the hydrogen filling station technology, we have concluded a business agreement with HnPower Co., Ltd., which has technical partnership with Osaka Gas Co., Ltd., and are conducting joint research and development.

Under the agreement, the two companies will actively participate in the hydrogen filling station construction project.
At the same time, The two companies will collaborate to increase the localization rate of core components of hydrogen filling stations and to cooperate in securing source technology.

Participated in construction project of domestic hydrogen filling station

We are participating in the establishment of ‘Hydrogen Energy Network Co., Ltd. (HyNet: Hydrogen Network)’, a private special purpose corporation of hydrogen filling stations.

In addition, we organized the SPC with 13 companies including Korea Gas Corporation and Hyundai Motor Company in the domestic hydrogen filling station and concluded an agreement to build 100 hydrogen filling stations by 2022.
